What happens when you have a political system that has no room for courage, ideas, or risk-taking
Irish society is in the midst of an epochal crisis, not that you’d know it. No young person can afford a house and that fact has fuelled the rise of Sinn Féin breaking the Irish political duopoly for the first time in 100 years. Their rise was in turn brought to a juddering halt by the brick wall of the refugee and immigration crisis, which is not close to being resolved. Crashes during the good times felt like turbulence; an interruption to Ireland’s continuous upward streak of liberalisation and improvements in material prosperity. In 2024 there is a dark sense that things may not be better in the future.
